The annual ‘Wish Tree Book’ program is in full swing with the Friends of the Seward Library.  A Holiday tree is decorated with ‘Wish Tree Book’ cards, and are available to Seward Library Museum patrons and Seward community to sponsor books for the children’s, youth and young adult shelves.  In 2018, the Friends goal of 100 new books was met, through generous community sponsorship.  Twenty dollars per book, sponsors may choose more than one book, there is no limit.  We are looking to meet and exceed our goal of 100 new books for Seward’s youth this year.

With three locations for sponsorship cards to be picked up:
  1. Seward Community Library Museum, 329 6th Avenue, downtown Seward, AK
  2. Resurrect Art Coffee and Gallery, 320 3rd Avenue, downtown Seward, AK
  3. Alaska SeaLife Center, 301 Railway Avenue, downtown Seward, AK

Children's Art From Sister City Obihiro

9/8/2019

Friends had a fun time doing 1st Friday Art Walk, September 6, 2019.  The last 'walk' of the season, the Friends displayed 18 handmade art pieces from our Sister City, Obihiro, Japan.

The art work was in a box unlabeled when the Collection Committee for the Friends of the Seward Library's historical and archives were working on our collections inventory.  While they looked to be Japanese writing on the art, it was confirmed during this years visit from our Sister City Obihiro, Japan.  During a community pot luck dinner for the exchange students and adults, the art was displayed and all of the writing was translated!  We would like to thank the students and adults that helped with the translating.

Community enjoyed viewing this artwork again on 1st Friday, there were many questions about the Sister City program.

Friends also had a black and white photo album available of pictures of Obihiro presented to Seward in 1967.

The Friends of the Seward Community Library are currently accepting applications for the annual Swetmann Scholarship.  Since 1978, the Friends of the Seward Community Library, have offered college scholarships to Seward area youth pursuing academic education or vocational training after high school. This scholarship opportunity is available to Seward-area students, between the ages of 16-21, who have been schooled in the Seward area for at least two years and carry a current library card. The scholarship is named for Viola Swetmann, the original founder of the Seward Library.

Applicants are invited to identify a passion or subject of interest that they would like to render into an original project that is created solely for this scholarship application inspired by information found within the Seward Community Library Museum. The project is intended to elicit the applicant’s connection to Seward’s unique history and resources through creative, personal expression. Projects are scored based on the number of resources cited, the depth of exploration, originality, clarity, and technical accuracy.  In years past, projects have included a creative historic quilt, clay vessels celebrating Rockwell Kent, historical poetry, and so on.

The winning project will receive up to $1,500, dependent on the number of awards given. All
other qualifying and quality projects will receive $50. The deadline for submission is May 1,
2019. Details and an application can be found at www.friendsofsclm.org.
