On Tuesday, Sept. 9, the Seward Friends of the Library and the Seward Art Council will co-host athlete, author, speaker, and 2012 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year Jennifer Pharr Davis. The program will be held at the Seward Community Library Museum at 6:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Jennifer has logged more than 12,000 miles on six different continents, including thru-hikes of the 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail, the 485-mile Colorado Trail, the 275-mile Long Trail in Vermont, numerous trails in Europe, and the 2,185-mile Appalachian Trail three times. In 2011, Jennifer wanted to test her physical limits and with the help of her husband Brew and a dedicated group of friends, she set the fastest known time (male or female) on the “A.T.” by hiking 47 miles a day for 46 days straight.

Jennifer will be sharing slides and stories, answering questions, and reading excerpts from her new book “Called Again,” which Kirkus Reviews calls “an inspired exploration of the meaning of commitment.” She will also be selling and signing books afterward.

For her adventures, Jennifer has been featured in the New York Times, The Washington Post, NPR’s Talk of the Nation, ESPN, and the CBS Early Show. She is founder and owner of Blue Ridge Hiking Company (www.blueridgehikingco.com), an Asheville, North Carolina-based guiding service with a mission “to make the wilderness accessible and enjoyable through the written and spoken word, instruction and guiding.”

The Seward Friends of the Library are pleased to present author and retired nurse Cathy Cuenin on Thursday, August 14, 2013 for a book signing and Q&A about her book, “The Way I Walk: From Tugboat to Transplant.”

Friends of the Library members are invited to attend at 6:30 p.m. Members of the public are
welcome to join at 7 p.m. for continued discussion, Q&A and the book signing.

Cuenin shares her stories hiking in Seward and Juneau’s mountains, living aboard a tugboat in Sitka and being in the company of bears. An experienced hospice nurse and an avid hiker and skier, Cuenin suddenly found herselfunable to catch her breath. After an emergency room exam
and treatment for a collapsed lung, she was told she was facing an untreatable disease that will
rob her of all her breath.

With humor and brutal honesty, Cuenin shares her responses to pain and loss of an active life.
“This book is poignant and uplifting, sad and hopeful. It is a story of courage and love, wonder
and anger. It is beautifully writtena nd will make you cry, laugh, and wonder how in the world the
universe works,” wrote one Amazon reviewer.

Two copies of Cuenin's books are at the Library front desk for Friends members to check out, or can be available at our local book store, Cover to Cover, downtown Seward.
